CHAPTER 1 The Plot Against America starts off in World War II. Hitler and Mussolini have caused conflict in Europe while Hirohito has started to slowly take over the pacific. While this event is happening, in Newark, New Jersey is the setting of a jewish family. The Roth family contains of Herman (the dad) who is pro democrat, Bess (the wife), Sandy (son), Phillip (Sandy's brother and our main character) and Alvin (cousin of Sandy and Phillip). While the family is being impacted by World War II, the rest of the nation is feeling the same whether or not the U.S. should go intervene in Europe or stay out of it and remain isolationist as it had under presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. Meanwhile the 1940 election presidential election is underway. The Democrats nominate President Franklin Delano Roosevelt while the Republicans nominated Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh vowed to make sure the U.S. would stay out of a European conflict by saying that it may be too late to prevent a war in eruope but it's not to late to keep U.S. out of war. Lindbergh won all but 2 states in the election and immedietly started what he vowed to do.
